Happy birthday Jason…REVAMPED.
Friday the 13th
It wasn’t that good, so I wouldn’t recommend seeing it, reading this will be enough.
Basic plot summary: A group of your average irresponsible teens go vacationing alone in the woods. Drinks are served, pot is smoked, sex is had and Jason is mad that he can’t get laid, so he kills everyone. (Note: The real reason is that as a boy, Jason drowned in crystal lake due to the negligence of the teenage counselors, he now haunts camp crystal lake)
As in most horrors, the characters are picked off one by one, starting with the ditzy couple that goes boating.
They both get shot in the head with arrows. They are no longer important to the film.
Jason: 2 Campers: 0
Moving on to the next scene, the next scene is really just a lot of sex, drugs, booze and “lulzy” moments brought to you by an Asian with a good sense of humor (Chewie), a black man who likes to smoke pot (Lawrence) and your average Caucasian teenage male with anger issues (Trent). This scene ends with Trent and Bree having sex, while Lawrence smokes. While the Chewie goes to find tools to fix the chair he broke, Jason watches Trent and co. have hot, degrading sex. We can assume he is jealous, so he takes his anger out on the doomed soul in the tool shed. We know what happens next.
Jason: 3 Campers: 0
Also, like your average horror, the suspense shots are all the same: Victim creeps slowly through a darkened hallway, and pulls back a curtain to eerie dramatic music, they find nothing, but the killer happens to be standing right behind them, and is introduced with an outrageously overused “DU-DUM”. Which is exactly what happened repeatedly throughout the film, same old, same old. On top of that not even 30 minutes into the film, a quarter of the group is dead. Can you imagine that happening more than twice in 30 minutes? Not very scary. *The shots used in Friday the 13th are almost exactly the same as the shots used in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, both were made by the same people. *
Meanwhile, Clay and Jenna are wandering around camp Crystal Lake, looking for clay’s missing sister, Whitney. They see Jason wandering around with a dead body, and they decide to run back to their friends to warn them.
Back at the ranch, Jenna and Clay return to find that Chewie has gone out to the shed alone, they call the police and everyone is in a general panic, Lawrence decides it is his duty to find his friend, and foolishly leaves the house.
Jason: 4 Campers: 0
After the remaining campers realize that their friends are dead and their lives are in danger, they decide to take drastic action. By calling the police again and scattering around the house. After a while of useless dialogue and more panicked floundering, the policeman shows up and promptly is stabbed through the eye. Jason is letting them know: This is serious business.
Jason: 5 Campers: 0
The dead policeman sends everyone into frenzy; the campers wander farther away from each other, all for no really good reason, except Trent who grabs a gun. Bree is quickly dispatched by being stabbed through the neck with a coat hanger, what a way to go. When the rest of them finish shooting her dead body a few times for good measure, [not kidding] they make a run for the cop’s car. Finding it locked, they run into the woods, because running into the woods is never used in a horror film.
Jason: 6 Campers: 0
Jason, with his magical ability to be exactly where his next victim is, despite the large distance between them, finds Trent and impales him on the back of a truck, while the truck driver watches, clearly unaffected.
Jason: 7 Campers: 0
Jenna and Clay run back to camp Crystal Lake and stumble upon Whitney, Clay’s missing sister. They free her and run into Jason, who has teleported back to his layer. Queue chase scene. Jenna gets stabbed through the chest.
Jason: 8 Campers: 0
The end of this movie comes when Whitney repeatedly distracts Jason with the same tactic. “Jason!” while she holds up a locket. After a brief scuffle Jason is killed.
Jason: 8 Campers: 1
The film ends with Whitney and Clay sitting on the dock, they toss Jason’s body into the lake, along with the hockey-mask and locket. All is quiet.
Until Jason leaps up through the dock and grabs Whitney.
Jason: 9 Campers: -1
Victor: Jason
This movie might have earned some more stars in my eyes if there had been a little more creativity. The death scenes were pretty good, but there wasn’t any emotion behind them. I feel like I’ve seen this movie in every horror film I have ever watched. Example: Hostages, corny music, running into the woods, kids alone in a cabin…ECT. The final verdict:
Movie: 1 star
DISCLAIMER: Thanks to Oriana for pointing out the “ *’s ”.
